The name 'shungite' is derived from the Russian village of Shunga , located in the Karelia region. It is the only area in the world where this stone is mined in pure form.

According to geologists, shungite is 600 million to 2 billion years old . Due to the presence of fullerenes – rare carbon molecules – some even suspect an extraterrestrial origin. In the 18th century, it was already used in thermal bath water by Tsar Peter the Great .
